]]> sex how to make love to a man. I thought I knew every sensation possible knew the kinds of words that needed to be said all the right places to touch and caress. I thought I knew what it was like to feel somebody else inside me both body and soul. And I thought with the exception of new techniques and new variations my learning was over. I was wrong though. Ever since I got to pledging myself to Greg and discovering what it's like to ostensibly (shudder) be with one man for the rest of my life. I've had my eyes opened to the underlying aspect of making love. I've discovered that there's another layer that sex brings to the picture once you're married. It's hard to describe but after discussing it with a few of my other married friends we came to the conclusion that having sex with your husband (or steady boyfriend whatever the case may be) takes on additional aspects of the relationship. Instead of only being seen as a painting on the wall it adds a more discernible tactile aspect; lovemaking becomes a statue with contours and dimensions that never existed before. Before when I would sleep with a guy it was all about the act. I knew what to do because I'd done it before. It felt wonderful you know? But it felt more or less the same if only because I was never with anyone long enough to envision it could be any different. It was like when I first started running in the morning. I would take different paths vary my lengths and even choose different times to head out. Yet in the end the basic act was the same. I would run go through the course I had plotted out and then I would finish. When I was young sex had very much the same sweet steps (except maybe for the finishing part.. haha). It was fun it was good exercise and it always left me wanting to do it again soon--but there was nothing more meaningful than the motions to it. I'm not saying there wasn't love involved but I had yet to connect the range of emotions aside from love I was feeling entirely with the act. Love was the only emotion I could show while I was with a guy even if it sometimes it was only a fleeting momentary kind of love. With my husband it's different--more intense and broader in its implications. Making love with him becomes more of a conversation than a speech. It isn't about what we do exactly. It isn't about what position we're in or how many times we make each other orgasm. We've reached every milestone you could think of in a five-year-marriage done it in more than a few locations and set personal records of both length and quantity. There really isn't anything new under the sun for us right now. What's different is that sex has taken on other aspects of our marriage. It really has. Sometimes it's about telling him how much I love him like how it was for us in the beginning. Other days we do it as something more light more playful--like two kittens chasing each other over the playpen. Some days we use it as a consolation technique when one of us saddened for whatever reason and words aren't enough to cheer them up. Sometimes it's about letting go of the anger between us sometimes it's about letting go of the tension between us and sometimes it's about letting go of the stresses that any normal marriage has. There are times when we use sex in the bedroom to resolve an impasse of something completely random (strange but true but we've used it as a way of deciding where to spend the holidays at or where to vacation or wherever). I don't know how you turn it into a contest of will but somehow we managed to do that too. Sometimes making love is both our sleeping pill and our alarm clock. Sometimes it's a birthday gift or a way to distract us from bad news. Sometimes it's a way to keep warm or to cool down. Sometimes it's a way to remember or a way to forget. Sometimes it's a perfect dessert or a way to work up hunger. And sometimes it has nothing to do with how much I love Greg. Sometimes it's only about how much I need him. When I was little I use to fantasize about having sex. Along with being able to drive. I thought of sex as a benchmark to know when I had reached adulthood. Little 'ole me used to picture what it'd be like. I have the dozens and dozens of poems to prove how transfixed I was on the prospect. And yet in all those musings. I never once fantasized that it could be both this mundane and extraordinary as I understand it now. Nothing could have prepared me for all the extra meaning and worth it carries along with it now. No longer do I see it as a separate part of my marriage; it's an extension of my marriage my relationship. Just like a relationship sex with Greg has it's ups and downs it's good days and bad days. But one thing that never changes is the fact that every time I feel him on top of me (or vice-versa) I seem to understand him a little bit more. Every little 'ole thing he does translates now into him speaking to me; I can almost anticipate everything he does now and respond in kind in a way I know he understands me. From the slightest tilt in his posture the order in which he moves from body part to body part I can gauge how he's feeling and I'm sure he can do the same with me. We've been together long enough that we've moved beyond the notes on the page so to speak; we're like two seasoned musicians just making up improvisations on the same set of themes as we go along. As Fanny says. "it's like you two are kids with your own secret language."That first time in the tent on the highway may have been my first exposure to the language. That may have been when I first started speaking it. But it's only in the last few years that I've really gotten proficient. It's only then that I've stopped thinking in terms of translating everything and started thinking of it as a way to communicate in its own right. The notion that smart blacks are tormented by other blacks until and unless they dumb down and force themselves to be stupid is both insulting and far too easy. Here's why. It just can't be that I was the only smart black kid in the 'hood who was mildly ostracized mostly as a backhanded compliment. Sure they made fun of our duct-taped glasses (as I write this. I'm wearing one of my seven pairs of reading glasses with only one arm) our misbuttoned shirts and the shoes I absentmindedly put on the wrong feet til I was 11 or so. What can I say my head was always in a book. I was famous for tripping up and down the stairs lost in my own thoughts and I got parodied a lot. Bien sur we avoided dances knowing we'd be laughed at for flubbing The Skate and The Bump (in my day dances had names and fairly specific moves). And for saying 'bien sur'. My being a girl makes a difference. I know but lots of the other smart black kids were f'd with in a way that just amounted to your basic hazing. We were like mascots the way doctors and nurses are in the military (they can't salute or about-face for shit and we always chuckled more or less affectionately when they tried). But they are as we were regarded as special if somewhat wacky. People called me "Negro Einstein" and yelled. "Hey brainiac! What's 1245 time yo mama!" Usually it was like asking the tallest guy at school what the temperature was up there. Very dark kids fat kids ugly girls and kids who came to school hungry and dirty had it much much much worse. My brother was tortured because the girls loved his curly "good" hair. Girls with "good" hair were loathed and in constant danger of getting it cut off in the locker room. Being the smart kid almost certainly meant you weren't the far more numerous kids lured into truancy drugs sex or crime. Why not worry more about them? On my way home through the hood with my spine warped by a double load of freely chosen extra credit books a knucklehead often blocked my path and demanded to know "which book about white people" I was reading that day. Even as a fourth fifth six grader etc. both their pride in me and their own personal wistfulness was palpable. They to know what Great Expectations was about wanted that I would read it instead of hanging on the corner with them. I could often see them wishing that maybe they'd read it too when it was assigned two grades back. Maybe their lives would be different if they had. When I served as a USAF linguist in S. Korea most blacks GIs upon hearing me speak to the locals would give me a "you go girl!" But every few months some brother (and it was always a man) would react with surprise then recover by snarling "Tom!" at me. When they learned I was at Harvard it was. "I guess Howard wasn't good enough for you." It couldn't be more obvious that torturing successful blacks is more about envy and regret than an actual embrace of ignorance and failure. Let's just think about this a minute: Of what other group in the annals of history could it really be believed that they prefer failure to success? Really? We're talking about adolescents here people. Who do they torture? The people they envy and the people they feel superior to. Wanna know how we can be sure of that? Do the same knuckleheads that supposedly beat up each and every one of us smart kids for acting white then embrace the literature that is assigned? Fond as we are of "outing" famous whites as "really" black do they then devour Pushkin and Dumas and hey let's throw Beethoven in there? Dutifully study the black history now so readily available? Master algebra once informed that it was invented by Arabs and not whitey? Chow down on physics now that the in the country is a brother? and because they think there's something fundamentally deficient in them since that black kid over there is excelling. We excel at sports because we believe we can—nobody beats up the basketball star do they? So rather than facing the yearning and the yawning failure churning inside them as the smart kids march into their futures they hide behind a know-nothing "racial pride." What are they supposed to say when beating up the valedictorian: "You make me feel like a failure?" "God. I wish I was going to the Ivy League like you?" No. They say. "Tom." Is it really more likely that failing students are happy to be so and think the Science Fair winner is 'dragging us all down'? Really? The absence of a single comment more than four days after this post indicates to me that yet again your honesty and logic have silenced those who have made defended profited from or simply enjoyed unfounded statements regarding black people in this case students. As a prison psychologist for the past 14 years I've worked with those who are portrayed as embracing ignorance and failure as authentically "black." Contrary to popular and profitable stereotypes my experience indicates almost all want to learn and always wanted to learn. Those who failed in school may ridicule the curriculum as "the white man's facts" but still fecklessly pursue "knowledge"--the label gangs give their dogma. I'm routinely visited by inmates asking for some of my newspaper columns to read. They are most interested in understanding the effects of the lies they were told as children including the lies that they could not learn and that they are essentially subhuman. Thus a column I wrote three years ago on the myth that Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson was shot 9 times which includes references to Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice," is a particular favorite of inmates (and of black high school students to whom I've lectured). There's no question that most of the inmates I work with want to learn and want to understand. The question is whether the public including your readership wants to learn and understand the truth about black students.

That command of course was only for the girls. The boys did not have it the same but I conclude that has to do with my father’s like of “Americanizing” his kids. It failed miserably. As young girls we had to be in the kitchen and check my mother cook so that we too would know how to do it. We cleaned house washed dishes and everything that a woman should know how to do. Where my peers were oftentimes going to a house party or the mall we were at home under lock and key. Last time we spoke you said that your dad referred to black men as “six pack dads” lazy fellows who neglected their parental responsibilities.  What other things were you told about black Americans? From where did they get this impression of African Americans? It wasn’t as though he sat us down and told us these things. [He mentioned these things] in passing when he felt as though African Americans were not appreciative of the opportunities they’ve been given [or when] he entangle slighted or irritated [by African Americans]. From the news weekly magazines and statistics he would derive from the number of single parent households and kids not sharing the last names of their fathers and unwed mothers that this is because of the men who were not responsible and not taking care of their households. In school was there any tension between African students and black students? If so why? I wouldn’t call it tension. It was more of an “I have no idea about the country you are from” or the things you eat or clothes you wear are different or “why is your label so weird?”  I feel it was simply ignorance. If you aren’t exposed to something it becomes a curiosity or an oddity. You wonder what is it and what makes it so different. I had my moments of feeling like a side show freak but I’m sure that feeling was mutual among a lot of high educate students. I tried to be invisible around the most vocal students. How were you treated by color students? For the most part it was the same as any other brown kid. Only when they learned I was from another country did attitudes change. Mostly for the positive. Their questions were more inquisitive along the lines of “I want to learn about you and your country.”  Not all white or black students had a negative response just a good majority. What are some of the stereotypes of Africans that blacks hold? From where did these stereotypes arise? Wow. They are universal and everywhere. African men have a lot of wives; we are all royalty and wealthy or the other extreme — poor and running around naked and barefoot. That we eat weird things — boiled wood branches (Yes I’ve heard that.). I’ve heard ignorance to the extent of that we have lions tigers elephants and monkeys roaming around. We undergo zoos too people!  For Nigerians specifically we are scam artists or alter. [These stereotypes come] from movies ( What do you think about this uproar over Senator Barak Obama being “black enough”? I think it’s all a perspective type of thing. What is “black enough”? Really? Who is putting up the argument? African Americans or the majority population? Why is this even an air? I thought here that the one drop rule applied to everyone.  He is half Kenyan and half Caucasian. So what? Hasn’t anyone noticed the browning of America? (Sorry this is in no way personal attack.) This country in 30 years will realize the conversations currently being had are baseless and a sign of how behind America is. I remember when we last spoke you mentioned your multi-ethnic multi-cultural get-togethers.  When and why did you start such a group?  How often do you cater?  What activities are involved?  What kind of a mix of people participates?  How and why do people connect your assort? It’s not a assort. It’s just my ‘group’ of personal friends that just so happen to be diverse. Indian. Eritrean. Trini. Jamaican and so on and so on. I’ve just been lucky to have good friends with such different backgrounds. It has somehow been almost a common thread to be a foreigner. Amongst my friends though. I do have quite a few Americans as well as multi-cultural friends.  I started the get-togethers about four years ago as an outlet to just mingle network and really get to know each other exceed outside of a club scene. We see each other regularly because I do party with them but we get together on the next level usually once a month to have a games night a barbeque/potluck outdoor events (kickball flag football dodgeball etc; we’re all kids at heart). The composition is wide as mentioned above but not to exclude. I also undergo Zambian. Kenyan. Guyanese. Haitian. Canadian. Japanese and Vietnamese friends. I’ve known most of them for years; I know all of them personally. Since it’s not a group there aren’t any joining or membership requirements. The vernacular of Americans today have become a challenge of who can be more PC (politically correct),when it’s as easy as respect for each individual’s differences. With a country as vast as this. I have yet to understand the necessity to put each person in box to be counted. Why? What sense does that make? I construe a quote that made me think it’s really this simple: ” People are desire a box of crayons. Some are dull. Some are sharp. Some are bright some are dark.  But they fit pretty nicely in the same box.”  Why can’t we all just live in the same box? After a little intro (reminiscent of DEP's "Weekend Sex Change") the EP's first killer cut "Life Is The Number One Cause Of Death" begins and you quickly pick up on about a dozen aurally pleasing moments before the song has a chance to assign into a swirling crowd of sludge. You'll be amazed throughout by the tight and technical skill in drummer Robert Forsythe's playing the double-guitar contend of Canning and Wilson unrelenting and fierce. The vocals are more or less typical for this mark of metal and that's a good thing because nothing too drastic is attempted in that department. The bass stays at a painfully-down-tuned aim throughout creating what the band calls 'swamp-chug'. A new term for me but it fits.
