Men's Basketball: National Prep Showcase - Day Two

- The National Prep School Showcase continued at UMass-Lowell and a number of players put up big numbers as the team play really started to heat up on Day Two. We saw big games from Devin Ebanks. Kim English. Dee Bost. Damier Pitts. Tyreke Evans. Dominic Stafford-King. Trey Blue and Larry Anderson Saturday afternoon. The early morning opener (9 a m.) was a well-played game that saw both teams recover from deficits to make an exciting finish down the stretch. In the first half both clubs traded baskets early as MCI built a four-point lead. 30-26 before Massanutten ran the final eight points of the half to go into the locker room up. 34-30 over MCI. The second half started with Maine Central going on a 10-2 run to open up a 55-41 lead with 10:16 to play. Massanutten took a time out re-grouped and ran off a 17-5 run to pull within two 60-58 at with 2:21 to play. But MCI nailed five straight free throws in the final 30 seconds to hold off a game Massanutten squad. 67-61 in an exciting finish to open up the day's play. Maine Central was led by 6-foot-6 Van Dellenbeck-Ouellette who finished with 19 points while 6-foot-3 Marcus Matthews added 18 points in the win. Massanutten's top gun was 6-foot-3 point guard Aaron Austin with 18 points and eight assists. He got solid support from 6-foot-7 Kevin McNeil with 15 points and nine rebounds as 6-foot-5 Mike Lyons added 14 points in the hard-fought loss. The second game of the day was a real barnburner between two high octane offenses from Hargrave Military and Notre Dame Prep. Hargrave jumped out to an early four-point lead behind the play of its stellar backcourt in -bound Damier Pitts and signee Dee Bost. But Notre Dame Prep tied it at 28-28 on a three by 6-foot-5 signee Kim English with 10 minutes to play. Again. Hargrave built a five-point lead at 42-37 with four minutes to play in the half. Notre Dame called a time-out and came back in full-court pressure to make a run to the buzzer taking a 48-46 lead with seconds remaining before giving up a run-out basket that let Hargrave tie it at 48-48 at the half. The second half started with Notre Dame prep playing its best basketball of the tournament behind 6-foot-2 Johnny Higgins and the sweet-shooting English to go up by their biggest margin at 66-59 with 12 minutes to play. At that point. 6-foot-4 Dee Bost took over for Hargrave scoring 10 of the next 16 points to give Hargrave the lead for good at 72-70 a lead they built into double digits down the stretch hitting 10-of-14 from the line in the final minutes to win a 102-93 decision going away. Hargrave was led by their super backcourt duo of Dee Bost with 28 points and 6-foot Damier Pitts who added 27 points and handed out seven assists. They got solid support from 6-foot-8 signee Chris Braswell who added 24 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. Eshaunte Jones had a strong second half to finish with nine points and six assists. Notre Dame Prep was led by 6-foot-5 Kim English with 30 points and eight boards. He hit four threes to bring Notre Dame back on two different occasions. He got solid support from Johnny Higgins with 22 points and nine assists while 6-foot-3 Melquan Bolding chipped in 10 points in the loss. The game started with a quick 8-0 run by St. Thomas More led by 6-foot-9 Indiana signee Devin Ebanks who scored six in the opening run (14 in half) to set the tone for later in the game. didn't fold and recovered to close to 31-28 with three minutes to play behind solid plat by Colorado-bound 6-foot-3 combo guard Nate Tomlinson. Both clubs traded buckets down the stretch in route to a 39-35 Thomas More lead at the intermission. The start of the second mirrored the first as St. Thomas More ran off a 15-2 start to basically put this one away building a 54-39 advantage behind some stellar play by 6-foot-7 T. J. Robinson. St. Thomas More was led by Devin Ebanks with 25 points and 10 boards but sat most of the final five minutes. He received solid support from the star of the second half run. 6-foot-7 T. J. Robinson who finished with 21 points and an impressive 16 rebounds. The Lee Academy squad was led by 6-foot-6 Chris Baskerville and 6-foot-5 Marin Zelalija who finished with 12 points each while 6-foot-3 Dorian Williams and Nate Tomlinson added 10 and nine. Respectively in the loss. in the opening four minutes to go up. 16-2 over FUMA. But Fork Union wasn't dead yet as they played typical Fletcher Arritt basketball (pass cut and shoot) to cut the Brewster lead to 31-26 with seven minutes to play in the half prompting a timeout. Brewster got back on track behind the ball handling of signee Mark Lyons and the shooting of 6-foot-3 Trey Blue to open up their lead to 57-36 again at the half. Blue finished with 20 points in the first half of play. The second half started with Fork Union slowly chipping away at the Brewster lead cutting it to 10 points. 70-60 with 11 minutes left in the game. The key guy in the FUMA attack 6-foot Dominic Stafford-King was on fire and the reason that Fork Union was back in the game. It remained close as the two squads traded bucket for the next seven to eight minutes until Brewster called another time-out with three minutes to play and Fork Union nipping at their heels by a 90-81 score. The Brewster squad got a quick 6-0 run that ended any hope of a valiant comeback and won a tough 100-84 decision. Brewster was led by 6-foot-3 Trey Blue with 27 points while 6-foot-4 Charles Abouo chipped in with 21 points. They received solid support in the second half from 6-foot-7 signee Emmanuel Negedu who had 13 points and 10 boards (all but two points in the second half). 's top gun was Dominic Stafford-King who dropped a game-high 33 points on Brewster but struggled versus the press (nine turnovers). He received solid help from 6-foot-7 Will O'Huaregbe with 14 points. 6-foot-3 Anthony Ervin with 13 points and 10 boards plus 6-foot Jason Dawson who added 12 points in the loss. In the early going it looked like American Christian might run away and hide as they built an early 31-17 lead with Tyreke Evans and his back court mates Jeremiah Kelly and Lamont Jones playing well. But it wasn't in the cards as Winchendon bounced back with a 10-2 run to close the gap to 33-27 with 7:16 to play. Six-foot-5 Larry Anderson from Winchendon and 6-foot-5 junior Oscar Griffin and 6-foot-7 Martez Walker from American Christian traded baskets as Winchendon closed the gap to two points. 47-45 at the intermission. Tyreke Evans led American Christian with 16 points while 6-foot-3 Ozan Dilik had 10 points for Winchendon. The second half was a real battle as American Christian built a 66-59 lead midway through the stanza before Tyreke Evans bumped knees with a Winchendon defender and missed about three minutes of the game. When he returned to the game it was a one-point game and Winchendon was threatening to take hold of the game. But Evans went on a tear scoring six of the next eight Christian points to put them back on top. 83-78 with 2:14 to play. Winchendon fought back to tie it at 83-83 on a Luis Leao three-point play. Tyreke Evans stole an inbounds pass and hit Lamont Jones for a lay-in then the 6-foot-4 wing drove to the hoop to put American Christian in front. 87-83 with 27 seconds to play as Christian held on to win a hard-fought 89-85 victory. American Christian was led by Evans with 32 points and six steals. He received solid support from 6-foot-2 DePaul signee Jeremiah Kelly with 16 points while Jones and Walker added 13 and 12 points respectively. Winchendon's top gun was 6-foot-5 Larry Anderson who finished with 25 points and 10 boards. Leao added 15 points while 6-foot-1 Anthony Raffa chipped in 12 points and Ozan Dilik and Jansy Crews scored 10 points each in the loss. Winchendon committed 34 turnovers and were at times their own worst enemy.
